The Pennsylvania 6th, located in the Philadelphia suburbs, has been the site of some of the closest races in the country in the last two election cycles. In both 2002 and 2004, the current Congressman, Jim Gerlach (R-PA), narrowly won election by a 51-49 margin. This is the election cycle, however, when Gerlach’s luck finally runs out. The 2004 nominee Lois Murphy is back for a rematch and she has already raised more than $800,000. In addition, this seat is trending Democratic – Kerry won it with 52% of the vote – and Governor Ed Rendell (D-PA) – who won this seat with nearly two-thirds of the vote in 2002 – will be heading the ticket this fall.

IN-08 (Map)

The infamous “Bloody Eighth”, the site of numerous hard fought Congressional races since the mid-1980s, is back on the radar screen this election cycle. Congressman John Hostetler (R-IN) upset Rep. Frank McCloskey (D-IN) to win this seat in 1994 and has consistently won reelection by small margins ever since. This district leans Republican, but Hostetler’s hold on the seat has always been tenuous – he has won more than 55% of the vote only once over the past 12 years. In addition, Hostetler is notorious for being a poor fundraiser and he has been involved in a number of bizarre incidents during his Congressional career, such as when he shouted at several breast cancer survivors who had come to lobby him for increased cancer research funding. This year, Hostetler faces his toughest challenger – Brad Ellsworth, a decorated police officer who has served as the Sherriff of Vandenburgh County since 1999. Ellsworth is the first elected official to take Hostetler in years and Ellsworth is currently outraising the Congressman by a wide margin.

NM-01 (Map)

Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) has faced tough race after tough race in this swing district that she first won in a special election in 1998. The seat leans Democratic – both Gore and Kerry won the district by tiny margins – and Wilson has never garnered more than 55% of the vote in any election. In the past, Wilson has managed to hang on against flawed challengers, but that strategy won’t work this year against Patricia Madrid, the popular New Mexico Attorney General and a proven vote-getter. Madrid is an experienced campaigner – she prevailed in highly competitive open-seat race for Attorney General 1998 and then won reelection in a landslide in 2002 – and she will also have the long coattails of Governor Bill Richardson and Senator Jeff Bingaman working in her favor.

FL-22 (Map)

In 2000, Congressman Clay Shaw (R-FL) barely hung on to seat in the face a strong Democratic challenge, winning reelection by a little more than 500 votes. This cycle the Democrats have finally found the candidate to finish the job, State Senate Minority Leader Ron Klein. This seat leans Democratic – both Gore and Kerry won the district – and Klein has already raised $1.34 million, more than Shaw and more money than any other challenger in the country.

Congressman Chris Shays (R-CT) had not faced a tough race since winning election in 1987 – until last election cycle, when Westport First Selectwoman Diane Farrell held him to 52% of the vote. Now Farrell is back for a rematch and Shays is running scared. This seat is trending Democratic – although George H.W. Bush carried this seat, both Gore and Kerry triumphed by sizable margins – and Farrell has already raised more than $500,000.

Congressman Rob Simmons (R-CT) has been a Democratic target since his upset of longtime Representative Sam Gedjenson in 2000. This seat is solidly Democratic – Kerry won the district by 10 points in 2004 – and Simmons has never won more than 54% of the vote. This cycle the Democratic candidate is Joe Courtney, a former State Represenative and the 2002 nominee for this seat, who already has more than $450,000 in the bank.
