Fifth term Congressman Mark Udall campaigned in 2004 with Colorado’s Republican House Speaker and helped pass one of the first renewable energy portfolio standards in the country. In 2007, he worked with cousin Tom Udall in the House of Representatives to pass the first ever federal Renewable Electricity Standard (RES), which was defeated in the U.S. Senate. He co-chairs the House’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus, and voted against the rush to war with Iraq in 2002 and against the Patriot Act. He’s running in a close race for the seat of retiring Republican Senator Wayne Allard. Oil and gas interests are backing Mark’s opponent, Republican Bob Schaffer.

Tom Udall

Also in his fifth term in the House of Representatives, Tom Udall previously served eight years as New Mexico’s Attorney General where he promoted transparency in government and prosecuted corrupt politicians of both parties. In 2007, he co-authored with Republican Representative Todd Platts HR 969, the first ever federal Renewable Electricity Standard (RES), which was defeated in the Senate. Tom understands that a clean energy economy will be a prosperous one, with lower food and energy prices. He voted against the Iraq War and calls for the responsible redeployment of our troops out of Iraq, and consistently champions tougher ethics laws. He’s running against conservative Steve Pearce for the seat of retiring Republican Senator Pete Domenici.

Jeanne Shaheen

In 1996, Jeanne Shaheen became the first woman elected Governor of New Hampshire. She brought Republicans and Democrats together to pass the Clean Power Act, first-in-the-nation legislation reducing power plant emissions, and energy efficiency programs initiated by her administration have saved New Hampshire residents almost $400 million. Her focus on the economy led to the creation of nearly 67,000 new jobs during her six years as Governor and to the third-highest high tech employment in the nation. In 2005 she became director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government, leaving in 2007 to challenge incumbent Republican Senator John Sununu. She’s in a toss-up race.

Jeff Merkley

As Speaker of Oregon’s House of Representatives, Jeff Merkley has led its most productive session in a generation, according to The Oregonian. He brought Democrats, Republicans and citizens together to address affordable health care, the environment, job creation and ethics reform. He has joined Oregon’s Democratic Senator Ron Wyden to support Democrats’ realistic short run and long run plans to control gas prices. In the U.S. Senate, Jeff wants to help create new jobs and energy security, and confront climate change, by investing in renewable energy, efficiency, and research and development, and by reducing carbon emissions. He is challenging incumbent Republican Senator Gordon Smith in a race that’s rated from toss-up to narrow GOP advantage.

Jerry McNerney

Congressman Jerry McNerney was originally recruited by his son serving in the military overseas, who asked that Jerry serve his country by running for Congress against Environmental Enemy No. 1 Richard Pombo. Since his election in 2006, McNerney has helped pass the Democrats first 100 hours of priority legislation, including ethics reform, a reduction in student loan costs, a minimum wage increase and support for stem cell research. He serves on the House Transportation, Veterans Affairs and Science Committees, and the Select Committee on Global Warming. He’s the Republican’s No. 2 Congressional priority to try to defeat this year.

Bill Durston

Dr. Bill Durston is an emergency room physician and decorated Marine Vietnam combat veteran who has spent his entire medical career treating patients without regard to their ability to pay. Endorsed by the Progressive Democrats of America, Bill supports universal health care, wants to end the occupation in Iraq, is in favor of the Employee Free Choice Act, promotes renewable energy, and supports “clean money” campaigns.
Republican incumbent Dan Lungren votes in lock-step with the Bush administration (95% with the conservative bloc), against expanding children’s health care and always for the continuing occupation of Iraq. After aggressive Democratic voter registration efforts since 2006, Lungren now has the slimmest registration edge of any Republican-held congressional district in the state.

Jill Derby

Jill Derby is the perfect candidate for her rural district, born on the Flying Flapjack Ranch in Lovelock, thrice elected to Nevada’s Board of Regents, overseeing its universities for 18 years, and the Nevada Democratic Party Chair this past year. Jill is running for Congress because she’s fed up with career politicians who put themselves and their party ahead of what’s right for the country, and has endorsed The Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq. At January’s Presidential Caucuses, 10,000 Nevadans registered as new Democrats in her district, and Jill’s rematch against first-term incumbent Dean Heller, a lock-step voter with Bush, looks dramatically different this time around.
