The people we vote for work for us. We don’t elect them to be kings or queens or to be above the law—nor to ignore our needs and wishes. In 2006 Blue America was all about helping elect progressives to Congress. That’s our main mission. This year we are also seeing what we can do, thru our PAC, to hold wayward members accountable. This year we helped 4 Democrats change their votes—if not their minds—on sustaining Bush’s SCHIP veto.
Right now we are trying to assist grassroots forces in Chicago to force Rahm Emanuel to explain his behind-the-scenes tactics against immigrants. Emanuel has been telling immigrants in his district that he is their “best friend,” while forcing Democratic candidates around the country to “move to the right” on immigration. Emanuel has turned himself into the Tom Tancredo of the Democratic Party. Since he was already the Tom Delay of the Democratic Party, a lot of accountability is called for.
