This page is inspired by someone else’s Daily Kos diary. These are the newly elected Democrats who are being targeted by Karl Rove in 2008 and who have been voting solidly progressive since taking office. These are the best and if you want to inspire candidates to vote well, supporting these guys is very important. Some also represent districts that will be critical for winning the Presidency in 2008. These are prime districts for defense. Critical races are those that are going to be close and are in presidential swing states/districts. Important districts are races where the race is a critical one, but it doesn’t have as much bearing on the presidential race.

Patrick Murphy

PA-08 (Map)

Patrick Murphy squeaked by to win unexpectedly in 2006 in a fairly Republican district. Since taking office, his voting record has been exemplary. We know that Karl Rove’s 2008 strategy targets Murphy. The combination of a great voting record so far and being a Rove-targeted freshman in a swing district makes PA-8 a top priority for us. CRITICAL DISTRICT.

Carol Shea-Porter

NH-01 (Map)

Carol Shea-Porter has been fighting to bring our troops home while restoring veterans benefits that the Republicans stripped away. Her voting record is good and this is a swing district in a swing state. Her 2006 win was about as close as they come and we know she is being heavily targeted. CRITICAL DISTRICT.

Hodes won more handily than his fellow New Hampshire freshman, Shea-Porter, but is still in a district that is critical to hold. His voting record is exemplary since he took office. Important district.

Another exemplary voting record from a new face in Congress. Another swing district. I have been watching the Iowa freshmen and they have been great—focusing on veterans, bringing out troops home, and alternative energy. Important district.

Dave’s win was one of the biggest surprises in 2006. His campaign was a real grassroots one and his win as close as could be. He is a solid progressive and has been voting well since taking office. He is one of the best and also one of the most heavily targeted freshmen. I’d say Loebsack and McNerney (CA-11) are our two most important defensive districts. CRITICAL DISTRICT.

Ed Perlmutter

CO-07 (Map)

This was one of our best wins in 2006 defeating a particularly awful Republican. Perlmutter has been voting the straight progressive line and is another case of a freshman Democrat, heavily targeted by Karl Rove in a swing district in a swing state. CRITICAL DISTRICT.

CA-11 (Map)

Jerry McNerney won because the grassroots came through. McNerney was initially ignored as having no chance, but Democracy for America kept his campaign alive and brought him to victory. McNerney is one of our best new faces and he is the NUMBER ONE target of Karl Rove. Rove started the smear tactics LITERALLY the day McNerney took office. Jerry is the ideal grassroots progressive and has really been doing us proud. This is one of our most important defensive districts. Important district.

This was one of THE CLOSEST of races in 2006 and so will be one of the hottest races in 2008. Courtney has been voting great, and came to my attention thanks to Jerry McNerney’s brother, of all people. Important District.

John Hall

NY-19 (Map)

We really squeaked by to win this one in 2006, but it was almost completely the progressive grassroots that did it. No one expected us to win this one. John Hall ran a stellar campaign, a real model for all progressive candidates. I knew many people who worked for it and they were amazed at how efficient it was. The Republicans are really targeting this one and, since Hall has been voting wonderfully since taking office, we really need to defend this one. Important district.

Mike won more solidly than did fellow New Yorker, John Hall, but he is still going to be targeted heavily by Republicans. They REALLY want this district back. Acuri has been voting extremely well and we need to keep him in office. Important district.
