I am running for Congress because Im concerned about the direction in which our country is headed, and equally concerned that my opponent, Joe Knollenberg, isnt. Under the mismanagement of President Bush, Tom DeLay, and Joe Knollenberg, our economy is backsliding down a path of uncertainty, our soldiers are dying in a costly war that no one can explain and access to affordable health care is beyond reach for too many Americans. The Bush/DeLay/Knollenberg tactic is to divide Americans based on our differences, rather than unite us based on our common values.
Having been in the automobile industry all my life, I never had any intention of running for office until now. But I realize that we are not getting the responsible representation we need and deserve in Washington. I also realized that I have a responsibility to do something to change that. In the last fifteen years, my specialty has been designing and managing new product launches. And I believe this experience has prepared me for the task we have before us now moving our government and our district in a more realistic and hopeful direction.
We the people need to come together to face up to the reality of our current situation, envision the future we really want, lay down a solid plan to get there and get to work on it.
We are at a turning point. We can either stay the course or we can restore responsibility in government. We can either surrender to chronic economic stagnation, or we can invest in the jobs and workforce of tomorrow. We can stand by helplessly as an increasing number of Americans go without basic health care coverage, or we can change the system, make it flexible and fair for all Americans. We can keep pouring money and lives into a quagmire with no clear strategy, or we can demand accountability, set realistic benchmarks for success and develop a plan to start bringing our sons and daughters home.
We dont need to compromise our most basic ideals in order to defend them.
This is my vision for America. Its a vision that restores respect and responsibility to government. It requires leadership that understands both our challenges and our possibilities; leadership that stands up for the people of this district and stands up to those who would exploit them; leadership that envisions a more hopeful future; and leadership that can make that better future a reality.
With your support we can do this. Together, we can be America again.
