An early opponent of the war in Iraq, Senator Obama has nevertheless been a strong supporter of defense funding and increasing veteran’s disability pay. He has fought to secure America’s chemical plants and eliminate unsecured weapons, and to require states and localities to establish emergency evacuation plans. A co-sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act, and supporter of Bill Clinton’s COPS program, the Senator also advocates a comprehensive, compassionate immigration reform that reaffirms the rule of law and brings the undocumented population out of hiding. Health care, he believes, should be a right for everyone, and not a privilege for the few, and the health of our environment is a priority for the world, with American energy independence at the top of Senator Obama’s agenda. To improve the state of public education in America, Senator Obama asks the federal government to fund its mandates and assist in identifying and expanding the best programs, while he also seeks to dramatically increase teacher pay and emphasize the invaluable, irreplaceable role of the parent. Senator Obama supports a woman’s right to choose while remaining deeply respectful of Americans strongly held religious beliefs.
