Congressman Duke Cunningham beat his challenger, Francine Busby, in 2004, as most incumbents do. But in the process thousands of citizens in San Diego County signed on to work to defeat the outrageously extreme right winger Cunningham. If the citizens had had an inkling at the time of how arrogant and corrupt he was, Busby would have won easily.
Now our chance has come to change the country. Even those who supported the war and voted for Bush are sick of the mess. Cunningham is sitting in prison and we have a special election in June to replace him. This is a very important election as the first one of 2006. If the Democrats can pull off a victory in this Republican leaning district, it will get the attention of the entire country. It could set the stage for the dominoes to fall and the Democrats could gain control of Congress to restrain the adventures of King George.
Busby opposed the war from the beginning and opposed trampling on our civil liberties. Her ethics proposal goes further than any proposed by either party to end the revolving door between elected officials and lobbyists (as in Cunningham, DeLay and Cheney). She is a strong advocate for a progressive social agenda.
Ironically, she is running against a former Congressman/current lobbyist. In the polls now they are in a dead heat. We have a real chance!
