Across America, there is a shortage of Asian Pacific Americans actively serving as political campaign managers, elected legislators, and civic leaders. There currently lacks a pipeline to encourage, facilitate and support participation in electoral politics within the Asian Pacific American community.
For the first time in 2008, the Asian American Civic Project, an initiative of APAP PAC, launched a Campaign Fellowship program to train five recent college graduates and place them on the campaigns of leading progressive candidates across the country. In 2009, the Civic Project program will target the campaigns of Asian Pacific American candidates running at the local and state level.
In July 2008, the Campaign Fellows attended a week-long campaign management training as part of the Emily's List Campaign Corps program. The Fellows were then placed as campaign staffers for some of the nation's most competitive campaigns in Illinois (Dan Seals for Congress), Minnesota (Ashwin Madia for Congress), Nevada (Dina Titus for Congress), Texas (Ellen Cohen for State Representative), and Washington State (Darcy Burner for Congress).
The Asian American Civic Project is intended to serve as a pipeline that provides recent graduates or those interested in a second career in politics an introduction into the political campaign management. The project provides paid fellowships for individuals to serve as full-time staffers on campaigns of candidates supportive of issues important to the APA community. This project will help lower the barriers for Asian Americans interested in becoming active in electoral politics.

Please note that following the Civic Project VIP reception will be an APA Grassroots Gala, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m, to celebrate the contributions of Obama grassroots supporters, and then a late-night after-party to honor rising APA political leaders. For more information on this event, please email APAPinauguration@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Clarence Tong Executive Director clarencetong@apapipeline.org
