My boss, Jeff Merkley, is fighting to take on Gordon Smith, a 90 percent Bush/Cheney Republican, this November. Gordon Smith is a skilled politician who says one thing to voters during an election, but does what’s politically expedient when he goes to D.C. He knows how to pull the wool over our eyes so we’ll re-elect him. And he’s trying it again this year with over $4 million in the bank!! In fact, the national republicans have already begun attacking Jeff Merkley with this new website: http://www.musttaxmerkley.com/.
Let me be honest, it’s pretty flattering to our campaign that Smith is running scared and attacking us before we’ve even won the primary, but in order to beat a two-term incumbent who claims to be a “moderate,” we have to raise more than $5 million. We know that Jeff has the experience to beat Smith, but we have to communicate that to voters.
But this isn’t just a critical election for Oregon. We have an opportunity this year to reach a 60 vote, filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, a luxury we haven’t seen since the Carter years.
