Margi Vanderhye

VA-HD-34

Margaret Vanderhye is a tremendous addition to the Virginia House of Delegates, having won a tough 2007 election to flip a district from Red to Blue, from fossil foolish to Energy Smart. Margaret is knowledgeable and passionate about energy and environmental issues, and 'walks the walk' -- an early VA adopter, for example, of solar PV panels on her own rooftop. She has already, in less than two years, made a name for herself in Richmond fighting for sensible energy options. We would be well served by seeing that she has a chance to build on that reputation.

Oregon Speaker of the House Jeff Merkley is the real deal when it comes to getting good energy and environmental practices through a legislature. He's done it in Oregon. He will be able to do it in Washington, DC.

Welcome to the 111th Congress, Senator Merkley!

INVOLVED IN RECOUNT: Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich went to a meeting with Al Gore, went home and compared the glaciers of his youth with the glaciers for his young son. He understands that the situation is serious. As Mayor, he has worked within his city, his region, his state, and the nation to help foster moves toward better energy practices. This is an experience and perspective that we need in the Senate.

Welcome to the 111th Congress, Senator Begich!

"We need to commit to independence from fossil fuels within a generation, and that will require major investments, a substantial shift in incentives, and a culture change as consumers. A revenue-neutral tax shift is one way to do this, but so are cap-and-trade systems that have worked to address problems such as acid rain.

Welcome to the 111th Congress, Congressman Perriello!

"As for the target, I most often hear from experts that we must draw the line at no more than a 2-degree Celsius temperature increase. Our goal must be set not by what seems politically possible but what will actually produce the end result we need."

Knollenberg was added to the League of Conservation Voters "Dirty Dozen List", as a representative with one of the worst environmental records in Congress. In contrast, Gary Peters is a former Sierra Club Environmentalist of the Year. While in the State Senate, Gary worked to BAN drilling for oil and gas beneath the Great Lakes.

Tony will bring a fresh breath to Congress and will become a member of the Bike Caucus, as a regular (but not only) bike commuter today. He understands that there is no Silver Bullet, but that we need a "smorgasbord of solutions". Let's get that smorgasbord to the Congressional table.
