<pageblurb>In many ways, my faith and my belief in service are the enduring legacy of my grandmother. As much as anyone, she was the person who taught me right from wrong. Whether through a kind word or a flick of her switch, she taught me what to do and, just as important, what not to do. We also learned at an early age the importance of the call to serve. We took to heart the command in the letter of James that it is not enough to say you have faith. You must also put this faith into action, for James is correct when he warns us that “faith without works is dead.”"

This desire to serve and to put my faith and beliefs into action is why I ran for Congress and why I have been privileged to represent the people of Memphis in Washington for the last nine years. It is also why I am running for Senate to represent the state of Tennessee. I want to help make the lives of all Tennesseans better.

<pageblurb>As a public servant, I am called to fill a role that is vastly greater than I am. This means that, difficult as it may be, it is my duty to be a governor who is a Christian, without being a governor who disregards the law or alienates those citizens whose beliefs differ from my own. If I came here today and told you this is easy to do, I'd be lying. </pageblurb>

<pageblurb>Jon Tester was raised near the town of Big Sandy, Montana, (population: 710) on the same family land that his grandfather homesteaded in 1916. The rich landscape and life as a farmer’s son instilled in him a deep-rooted commitment to Montana, family, faith and hard work.

Senator Tester recently completed his fourth regular session in the Montana Senate. In 2005 he became President of the Montana Senate, and his tenure has marked a significant and successful transition for Montana Democrats as they moved into the majority leadership of the Senate for the first time in more than a decade.

Tester is now running to replace Conrad Burns, a Republican who has become out of touch with ordinary Americans and a little too cozy with the perks of his office. Tester needs your support to win one of the closest races in the country and help Democrats win back the Senate.</pageblurb>

<pageblurb>Growing up, my parents instilled in me the importance of public service. Through their strong faith and commitment to each other, our family and our community, I learned what a meaningful impact our caring involvement can have on those around us.

Every part of my life, whether being a mother or public servant for the people of Kansas, is formed and sustained by my faith. I believe it’s important for public servants to remain true to themselves while making choices which reflect the diverse groups of citizens they’re elected to serve.

The lessons from my family and my upbringing guide me today as I work to improve the lives of the people of Kansas. Government must put the people of Kansas first by promoting values and policies that advance the common good and expand opportunities for every resident of our state. Our core values call on us to make
our state the best in the nation in which to live work and raise a family, not just for ourselves, but for all Kansans.</pageblurb>

<pageblurb>I have never shied away from openly discussing my faith. Throughout my high school, college, and professional career, I have been an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a spokesman for Character Counts. I have spoken to thousands of students across the country, sharing my testimony and trying to be a positive role model for them. Nikol and I are now raising our two children in the mountains of North Carolina with the same values that we were raised with."

<pageblurb>I understand that faith is an easy word to misunderstand. Faith doesn’t simply mean to factually believe in a particular occurrence. It means to live and breathe the reality of one’s personal and or religious convictions. According to my personal understanding of the Christian faith, it means to follow the example of Jesus into a life of service to others.

It is a moral necessity for me to make this teaching the central organizing principle of what I do.

Does this mean that I’m always successful? No. But I want this to be the direction of my heart, and as a public official my vision for Ohio will be rooted in my conviction — my deep-abiding faithful conviction — that we are all part of the same human family with shared responsibilities, and that the government’s relationship to its citizens is always best when it is rooted in servanthood.

<pageblurb>I was raised in a family of eight children where our parents taught us about the importance of caring about people, especially those who are vulnerable. My father taught me to believe that every person has a God-given talent that deserves to be discovered and that every person should have the opportunity to reach their full potential. My parents were faithful Catholics, and they took us to Mass every week. Yet I learned the most about my parents’ faith by the way they lived their lives. They took the words of St. Francis to heart when he said, "Preach the Gospel always — use words when you have to." I grew up in a time when Americans were inspired by our political and religious leaders’ injunctions to reach beyond ourselves and give back to the country we love.
