OK, you know the disclaimer - "i don't normally ask things like this, but.." - but this time it's really important. Our friends and neighbors all deserve the same rights of entrapment into the bonds of ritual mutual servitude! Not wanting to deny anyone the fundamental right to enter into an unrealistic and irrational commitment likely to end in recrimination and regret, I am a strong supporter of the "No On Prop 8" campaign.

If the Mormons can contribute --$17--$22M in favor of H8, you can kick in a couple of bucks in opposition...

The ballot description for Proposition 8 makes it perfectly clear: Prop 8 "eliminates the right of same sex couples to marry." "No On Prop 8: Equality For All" is the coalition that is leading the fight to defeat Prop 8 and defend the fundamental right to marry for all Californians. Their focus groups show that if people see ads from both camps, they usually end up on the No side. So let's get these guys enough money to put more ads on the air over the next week.

Nate Silver summarizes the recent polls: horrifically, it's still too close to call, which means there's a very good chance this hateful, rights-removing amendment will become part of the state constitution. ZOMG!!! See this article for the sad evidence. This is for real, folks. This is actually happening.

Also, support for Prop 8 is high among Californian African-Americans and Latinos. If you have any connection to those communities - or to anyone in California whose vote is in question - I encourage you to make a call or send an email and try to spread the word about how wrong it is to take a right away from fellow citizens, even if you disagree with the exercise of that right yourself. This country has made great strides even during my lifetime towards increasing tolerance and respect for ethnic and social diversity, and I would consider it a devastating tragedy if we let this backslide now.
