<pageblurb>Dear Fellow American:

I need your help to defeat Vito Fossella at the polls in November. More than any election since 1994, the Democratic Party now has an opportunity to retake both houses of Congress to secure and restore the Democratic values Americans hold dear and to neutralize the Bush agenda over his final two years.

This is a winnable seat, but it will take a lot of money to counter the Republican dollars in this race. Unlike the rest of New York City, the 13th Congressional District in Staten Island and Brooklyn had long been considered a safe seat for a Republican. Then, in 2004, Democratic candidate Frank Barbaro, a feisty 76 year old, was able to secure an unprecedented 41% of the vote.

Since then Congressman Fossella has been in free fall. His unflinching support of Bush, his support for dismantling Social Security, his vote to soften house ethics rules to keep Tom DeLay in place, his support of tax cuts for the rich, his anti-labor record and his shunning of large swaths of his district among other issues, have all combined to make him vulnerable. A prominent democrat was quoted in the Daily News as saying "You'd have to have your head examined to think this isn't a supercompetitive race."

There's too much at stake in this election not to commit all our available resources to capture this winnable seat. I hope I can count on your support.

Sincerely,

Stephen A. Harrison
