We had the chance to meet Jeff Merkley in 2004 when he began his fight to recapture the Oregon House from the Republicans who had held power since 1990. Through Jeff’s exemplary leadership, and against the projections of virutually every political pundit, this goal was accomplished in 2007. Jeff was elected Speaker of the Oregon House. Today Speaker Merkley leads the most progressive legislative assembly in the country. In a mere 14 months of Democratic leadership, the Oregon Legislature has advanced a statewide agenda deseperately stalled after 16 years of Republican control. Led by Speaker Merkley and the Oregon House, the Legislature established a rainy day fund, adopted the most progressive energy policy in the nation, increased Headstart funding by over 20 percent, and stopped unscrupulous payday lenders.
Now, Jeff wants the US Senate to shake off the vestigages of Republican control in the same way the Oregon House has advanced under his leadership. The majority of Oregonians think that Gordon Smith is doing a poor job and are pessimistic about the direction of our country. This is the time for us to step up and support elected leaders of conscience and substance like Jeff Merkley who will work tirelessly to solve the serious problems confronting our state and our nation.
Jeff is the son of a rural mill worker. First in his family to go to college, he excelled at both Stanford and Princeton. From there he was asked to move to DC as a Presidential Fellow where he would spend a decade working to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons. He spent the next decade in Oregon immersed affordable housing as the director of Habitat for Humanity and then of Human Solutions.
