Votes for candidates are made at the kitchen table. That’s where we really talk. So, let’s talk. And, afterwards, I hope you’ll support John Edwards for President.
For a couple of years I had been admiring the work my neighbors on the corner had been planting and tending the public center island of the main street. I believed everyone in the neighborhood must notice and feel the same way.
So I created a “Certificate of Appreciation” and went door-to-door for signatures. Everyone agreed, invited me in, and signed. I only wish it had been sooner.
That helped me realize I was missing my sense of community. I had gotten to know neighbors for the first time, and like it. And I got to spend time again with neighbors I had known through our kids; but hadn’t seen since our kids had grown up, gotten involved in different interests, and gone their separate ways.
So I went door-to-door to create a new, comprehensive neighbor contact list for neighbor-only use. Everyone welcomed the idea and welcomed me into their home. Usually, we sat at their kitchen table. We told stories about the neighborhood. I got to know those I hadn’t known because they were from different “kid generations”. I reconnected with those I did know but hadn’t spoken with in a while. We reminisced about old times. We got caught up. We agreed to stay in touch. We all felt the same way.
Ever since then, I’ve gone door-to-door to meet with my neighbors to campaign in elections, to sign petitions for local causes, and discuss other community issues. Each time, we usually sit at their kitchen table and talk.
It reminds me of sitting at my grandparents’ kitchen table and talking. It reminds me of watching TV shows and family movies. People all over the country and all over the world sit down to talk about really important issues at the kitchen table.
I’m going to go door-to-door again now to talk about electing John Edwards president in 2008. I expect some really good kitchen table talk.
John Edwards shares my values and vision for America. He calls it “One America”. I call it “Responsibility and Respect for Each Other and from Each Other”. John reminds me of Bobby Kennedy in 1968 and, maybe, Bill Clinton in 1992. He’s the right man at the right time at a critical moment in our history.
Please read his positions and policies. Please listen to him speak for himself. If you agree then commit, contribute and campaign. If you have doubts, then call or email me to talk about it … your kitchen table or mine.
Steve
