Jessica King, a UW-Oshkosh Alum, is currently serving as the youngest member of the Oshkosh Common Council as well as the only woman. As a student at UW-Oshkosh she served as the President of five student organizations, including our award winning Model United Nations team, the Phi Mu Fraternity, the Political Science Honor Society, the Order of Omega Honor Society and lastly, the Oshkosh Student Association. She knows what it means to be a student and what quality public education means for our future during hard financial times. The State of Wisconsin must increase its support to the UW System and increase the amount of financial aid for the students who need it the most. We cannot afford to wait any longer.
Our future depends on the willingness of voters to send our best problem solvers to Madison to advocate on our behalf. To many voters who are used to the performance of their current State Senator, the task of revitalizing Wisconsin may seem impossible, but not to Jessica King. Jess is a woman who has been strengthened by adversity and has risen to meet every challenge that has confronted her. She was born of disabled parents, nurtured by the Wisconsin foster care system, and received quality public education with the assistance of Federal Pell Grants and Veteran’s benefits. She has now become a successful professional who serves her community at numerous levels. Jess realizes how hard she had to work to finish her education and realizes that if she were to attend college in 2008, she may not have been as fortunate because the cost of education has risen at such an alarming rate. It takes hard work and dedication to become a proven leader like Jess King and we need her voice in Madison now more than ever.
The students of UW-Oshkosh have participated in elections at record levels in recent years, including when over 1,700 voted in the 2006 midterm elections and most recently in the primary election when 1,343 students voted. There is little doubt that the youth demographic, ages 18-29, will decide the upcoming election. This November, students have the opportunity to not only elect change at the national level in the Presidential race, but also at all levels of government. It is crucial that students follow this race with urgency because we deserve an elected official who knows what its like to be a student and who will represent us in Madison. Students can take part in making the impossible possible again. You deserve better. The time is now to make a change. Vote Jessica King for State Senate in November.
