Kay Barnes is a common-sense Democrat that will bring the change we need to Northwest Missouri. She will be a strong voice for the families and farmers of the 6th District, and I intend to do everything I can to send her to Congress in 2008.
I grew up in the 6th Congressional District, which encompasses northern Kansas City and its suburbs, and stretches north to the Iowa border. When I was younger, the district was represented by Pat Danner, a no-nonsense Democrat who shared the values of the residents in the district. But in 2000, the seat was hijacked by the current occupant, Sam Graves. Graves isn’t a mainstream Republican—he is a George Bush and Dick Cheney “mini-me,” and he votes that way. Expand the SCHIP program to cover low-income children? Graves voted “no.” Prevent corporate mega-farms from gobbling up subsidies meant for family and small farms? Graves voted “no.” Bring our brave soldiers home from Iraq? Graves voted “no.” Allowing unfettered FISA wiretaps on Americans’ telephones? Well, Yosemite Sam voted “yes” on that one. Dick Cheney was proud, I’m sure.
Kay Barnes is the perfect choice to replace Graves. She was born and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri, and is coming off a very successful 8 years as mayor of Kansas City. While I was living in downtown KC, I saw firsthand the impact Kay had as mayor. By the time she left office in 2007, downtown had been reborn. Part of Kay’s success is due to her devotion to economic development, something that is sorely needed in rural northern Missouri—and an issue that Rep. Graves has ignored.
Let’s elect a Congresswoman who won’t stand for “business as usual” in DC. Please help support Kay by making your secure, on-line contribution.
