Friends of Jim Neal,

Jim’s loss in the North Carolina Senatorial primary was disappointing to many. I am so impressed with how gracious Jim has been in defeat—although not surprised. Working on the campaign with him I do know that amongst other qualities, Jim is first and foremost a principled and compassionate man.

I spent a lot of time traveling across North Carolina with Jim as his body man. In fact, I spent more time with him than anyone else working on or volunteering for the campaign. Jim put an extraordinary amount of his energy, commitment and resources into the Campaign. He was absolutely relentless. I don’t know if many of you have seen the data, but our campaign was outspent 4:1 – and it’s always tough raising money as an outsider candidate. And Jim has said unabashedly that’s not an excuse for having lost the race.

Of the approximate $400,000 which the Campaign raised, Jim personally lent the Campaign over $120,000. To the chagrin of our campaign finance director, he took a stand against moneyed interest groups and refused to accept any contributions from Political Action Committees (PACs), though the Campaign certainly could have used the funds.

The Campaign has other debts bringing the total to around $130,000. I know that Jim wants to do the best he can to retire the Campaign debt and that’s in many ways more difficult than raising money for an active campaign.

Anyway, I wanted to ask those of you who can to support Jim in his efforts. You can contribute whatever you wish – or not at all, as some of you have more than others. If you want to help Jim retire the Campaign’s debt, here are a few ideas:

1. Make a personal contribution now, right here.
2. For North Carolinians, host a house party with your friends to raise $250 or more. I'll get Jim to come.
3. Reach out to your friends and ask them to contribute
