<blurb>Dear friend,

I know my son Ben has been emptying some of your coffers in his campaigns for Leukemia/Lymphoma, but I have come to you with a different kind of request. Years ago, my high school (and junior-high-school, and Sunday School) boyfriend brought a remarkable person into my life when he married an absolutely fabulous woman. Her name is Phyllis Hendler Busansky, and she is the Democratic candidate for Congress from Florida’s Ninth Congressional District. It’s a district that has leaned Republican but is now up for grabs. Phyllis’s candidacy in this mid-term election of 2006 is the first time I have felt hope since George Bush and his cronies created an America that has forgotten its mission.

Because she is a friend of mine, you are correct in assuming that Phyllis is very much a humanitarian and an advocate for better lives for more people. She deplores the direction taken by the current government, but she is also a realist: her greatest strength is in “bringing people from both sides of the table together to solve tough problems like health care and welfare reform” as Senator Bob Graham said in his endorsement of her candidacy.

Until Phyllis announced for Congress, I felt powerless before the Republicans’ catering to special interests, further enriching the already-rich-enough-for God’s-sake, perpetuating an under-class and making the gulf between rich and poor into an ocean. Now I feel as though I have a tiny stake in making something good happen for the country by supporting a woman I know to be honest, smart, and experienced. I cannot stress strongly enough my confidence in her leadership and in her conscience. If she goes to Congress, she will work enormously hard and she will make a difference.

I know we don’t live in the Ninth Congressional District of Florida. I know we have many priorities and many demands on our resources. I know we have all supported candidates “from a distance,” hoping that they would truly be the kinds of people we need. Well, here’s someone close-up and personal to endorse and support. I hope that you will be able to contribute even a little to

Phyllis Busansky, my first political “sure thing.” And I thank you.

If you don’t trust the Internet, send me a check made out to Busansky for Congress, and I will send it to her.
