"Because It's Time"

Dear Friend,

These are critical times for our District, our State, and our Country. Certainly, the decisions we make today will shape the world our children and grandchildren inherit.

I’m running for the Washington State Senate because I know I can make a positive difference.

I was born in the heart of the District to a hard-working blue-collar family, and I raised my own daughter here. Now, she and my son-in-law are raising my two beautiful grandchildren here, too. It is because of Samantha and Jared—and the legacy we will leave to them—that I am running. I understand what’s at stake for my neighbors and for people across our great state and I am willing to work hard to shape government and policy in a way that my grandchildren will be proud in years to come.

I have been doorbelling and talking to voters about the things that matter most to them, and I’m ready to take those concerns to the State Legislature where I’ll be a champion for working families, for our elders, and for our children who represent our future. People at the door have shared their concerns about skyrocketing gas prices, our economy and the need for livable wage jobs. They talk about the future of energy in this state and nation. And they tell me of their concerns about education and access to affordable health care for all.

I will work for education to support at 21st Century economy and that prepares our children and workforce to reach their highest potential; low-impact development and new businesses with family-wage jobs with incentives for developing markets in bio-energy, biotechnology, and high-tech industries that co-exist with a healthy environment while supporting our farmers, re-localization, and greater self-sufficiency. And, importantly, I will work for accessible and affordable health-care for all. We need a health-care system that will focus on us, not the powerful special interests who’ve blocked real reforms for decades. Instead, we need affordable access, reduced premiums, creation of insurance pools and expanded portability—a system that will provide the care we need at a price we can afford.

I am running in a tough battle that has been likened to “David and Goliath” and with the Connecticut race of Lieberman and Lamont. We are presented with the extraordinary opportunity to finally create a “working majority” in our State Senate. I hope that you will support my candidacy for working families, for low-impact economical development that coexists with environmental stewardship, and a just society that provides access to affordable health care.

“Because it’s time,” together we can create a brighter future for our children and grandchildren. All we need is the will to do it. We have five weeks remaining to get my message to the People before the Primary election. Please contribute as generously as you can. Thank you for your support!
