Local Action for National Victory

by simon

A short (four person) list for House candidates in four important states: Missouri, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Florida. While we can hope—but can’t expect all four to pull in victories, building Democratic support in these close states translates into crucial support for Democrats across the board, from county seats to John Kerry and Edwards.
House candidates can speak to local needs, and help fight the lie machines of national news. Take a look at the national polls to see how we’re doing, and then take a look at Missouri, Pennsylvania, Florida and Colorado to see just how close things are in the Presidential race. When local candidates bring their experience to bear, they take with them to the polls many voters who would have stayed home.
On this list is a former cattle rancher (John in CO), a researcher (Jim in FL), a lawyer (Lois in PA) and a high school history teacher (Mr. Broomfeld in MO.) All four are in states that are realistic possibilities for a straight blue sweep—and every dollar of our support to these candidates goes towards funding voices at the local level.
Put in $20, $40, or $100 total to spread some love to those fighting for us across the country. You’re not going to get spammed (e-mail address is optional), but your donation will go a long way towards “spamming” the most corrupt leadership we’ve ever seen, where by “spam” I mean “votes.”
I’ve included some info on the candidates from various places around the web.

Former State Rep. Charlie Broomfeld (D) is challenging incumbent Rep. Sam Graves. In addition to fighting in a swing state, this guy is up against some of the dirtiest Republicans you’ve ever seen. The GOP knows to get its dirty work done by the local candidates—let’s step in and even the score.

PA-06 (Map)

Lois Murphy (D) is challenging incumbent Rep. Jim Gerlach®. Mole writes: “This is a Republican district. However, it is one of the few chances in this election to make inroads into Republican territory in PA. If this district can be turned into a close race, then Hoeffel and Kerry will have a much better chance of winning the state. Lois Murphy is endorsed by Progressive Majority (a progressive Democratic group) and by MoveOn.org.”

Jim Stork (D) is challenging incumbent Rep. Clay Shaw®. From Gautam: “The openly gay mayor is challenging a 12-term Republican incumbent. He’s fundraising like crazy and running one Hell of a campaign in a district that voted 51-46 for Gore in 2000. He can definitely win this seat; he just needs cash. “

State Rep. John Salazar (D) will face the winner of the August 10 GOP primary for the seat of retiring Rep. Scott McInnis®. “Zeroweek”, a Colorado blogger, has this to say: “Brother of Senate candidate facing off against former state DNR director and West Slope water stealer, Greg Walcher. This one is special people. A true rural western district has a good chance for democratic representation. Words can not express how precious that possibility is. ... Do you have any ski bum friends in CO? Tell, them to get of their apathetic, psuedo anarchist assess and freakin’ vote!!!”
