These Congressmen are in my opinion the most important congressional races in 2008. All are Freshmen and thus at the most vulnerable moment in their careers. They also all represent strongly Republican districts and have already been targeted by either Karl Rove or the Republican National Campaign Cfommittee. Each is committed to a progressive agenda. (note: I am aware that there are only 4, I am holding off on choosing a 5th. I will probablly add the Colorado Senate race but I am waiting for Mark Udall to declare.)

McNerney was 3rd on Karl Rove’s leaked hit list of the most vulnerable Democratic congressmen. He is certain to be heavily targeted by the RCCC.
McNerney was insprired to run for Congress by his son who enlisted in the Air Force after the attacks of September 11.
He has a long career in wind engery and is now the CEO of a start-up company that manufactures wind turbines. His work over the years contributed to saving the equivalent of approximately 30 million barrels of oil, or 8.3 million tons of carbon dioxide – the main greenhouse gas – as well as other harmful pollutants.
He has voted with Speaker Pelosi 100% of the time.

NH-01 (Map)

Shea-Porter narrowly won in 2006, receiving only 51% of the vote to her Republican opponent’s 49%. Her victory was one of the biggest upsets of 2006 as Shea-Porter, a local Democratic Party official with a strong anti-war bent unseated a GOP incumbent who had never received a serious challenge in New Hampshire’s more conservative district. Her success represents the blue-ing of New Hampshire, a trend that we need to encourage. Also, I am personally committed to supporting the few congresswomen in the hopes of someday achieving gender parity. The NRCC has already created a web-page devoted to attacking her progressive voting record.

Number one on Karl Rove’s leaked hit list, Lampson represents a 65% Republican district (the former turf of—who else?—Tom DeLay).
Lampson is widely believed to be the most vulnerable Democratic congressman in 2008

Image of Nancy Boyda

Nancy Boyda

KS-02 (Map)

Boyda won with 51% of the vote in 2006. In 2004, her district voted for Bush 59%-39%. NRCC chairman Tom Cole declared in Jan 2007 that he intends to target Boyda in 2008. Ryun has already announced that he will try to get his seat back. Boyda votes with Nancy Pelosi 98% of the time. Her victory in Republican Kansas was remarkable and we cant let it slip away. If she loses we may not get another Democrat in this seat for a long time let alone a progressive woman.
