There are only 15 seats separating the Democrats from a majority in the House of Representatives. And three of the most vulnerable Republican-held seats are in Connecticut—that’s a full 20% of what’s needed to bring oversight and balance back to our federal government.
Why are these seats up for grabs? In short, because Connecticut is a blue state, the Republicans holding the seats haven’t lived up to their Constitutional responsibilities, and the three Democratic challengers - Joe Courtney, Diane Farrell, and Chris Murphy - are, in a word, fantastic.
We’ve also got Ned Lamont, an incredibly exciting progressive candidate who, as Senator, will challenge George W. Bush on some of the most important issues of the day.

When George W. Bush needs support in the House, he calls Republican Rob Simmons. And Simmons consistently comes through and votes with Bush, even though the policies are disastrous, and CT-02 is overwhelmingly Democratic. Democrat Joe Courtney, a highly respected former legislator, is challenging Simmons and making this race one of the most competitive in the country. Courtney is focused on changing course in Iraq, protecting Social Security, improving health care policy, and much more. He deserves a win here.

Returning after a strong challenge to Chris Shays in 2004 (she came within two points), Democrat Diane Farrell is a formidable candidate and has a very real chance of winning this race. Shays has given unqualified support to Bush on the Iraq War (until recently, with accountability suddenly at hand). Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone like Diane Farrell asking the tough questions? Farrell is also committed to bringing fiscal responsibility back to Washington. Make no mistake about it—Shays is vulnerable.

Ned Lamont, the Democratic candidate for Senate in CT, is simply the most exciting candidate in the country. His positions are sensible and progressive, and offer a clear alternative to Lieberman’s “more of the same,” “stay the course” approach. Lamont also promises to show up to work, unlike Lieberman, who has missed scores of votes on the most important issues of the day, including Iraq.

Nancy Johnson has been around long enough, and has finally met her match in Democrat Chris Murphy. Chris is smart, well-spoken, and energetic, and promises to take on national security, health care, energy, and other important issues in the next Congress. Nancy Johnson’s indisputable reliance on the pharmaceutical and energy companies (in the form of massive campaign contributions) makes her much less independent a voice than her constituents deserve.
