Jim Esch

NE-02 (Map)

In 2006, Jim Esch ran a spirited underdog campaign against Rep. Lee Terry. On election night, Esch came closer than any Democrat in the last decade to winning the Second District.
Encouraged to run again by his grassroots supporters, Jim Esch is working even harder to restore leadership to a House seat that has been neglected for ten years by its current occupant.
Jim Esch grabbed Lee Terry’s attention in 2006. Grassroots supporters like you will make sure that he is our next Congressman in 2008.

Gail Kopplin

NE-SD-03

State Senator Gail Kopplin has distinguished himself as a voice for the middle class. In the 2008 session of the Legislature, Kopplin was particularly focused on reducing property taxes with progressive proposals that would have created a $25,000 homestead exemption for Nebraska homeowners. Let’s make sure he’s able to continue with those efforts on behalf of working families and senior citizens in 2009 and beyond.

If you need any other reason to support Kopplin, look no farther than the blog written by his opponent, where Scott Price attacks Kopplin for being a registered Democrat and proclaims “I am an unabashed Republican and all of my literature says as much.” That doesn’t sound like a man who has much regard for the Unicameral’s proud tradition of nonpartisanship. For further evidence, Price also promises his full support for any future tax cuts proposed by Gov. Dave Heineman – even though they’re only likely to benefit corporations and our state’s wealthiest citizens.

Please support State Sen. Gail Kopplin as he runs for re-election in Sarpy County’s Legislative District 3.

Image of Heath Mello

Heath Mello

NE-SD-05

Term-limited State Senator Don Preister is one of the most profoundly decent men who’s served in the Nebraska Legislature. The fact that he’s endorsed Heath Mello as his successor in Legislative District 5 really should tell the voters of South Omaha – and the NNN community – everything they need to know.

This is what I can tell you about Heath Mello. He’s bright. He’s engaging. He’s passionate. And, most importantly, he really does care about regular people. I could toss out plenty of policy positions and personal testimonials that prove his progressive credentials, but nothing is more persuasive than Heath’s simple ability to connect with Nebraskans from every walk of life and every political persuasion.

Serving in the Nebraska Legislature, not only would Mello be a strong voice for the working-class voters of Omaha and Bellevue, he would be an asset to the entire state. With so much experience at so young an age – having learned from elder statesmen like Preister and received on the job training from his former boss, U.S. Senator Ben Nelson – Mello is just the sort of leader we need to guide Nebraska through the difficult times ahead. His is a candidacy of rejuvenation and renewal. You should feel confident in offering him your trust, your support, and your contributions in this important election year.

Jeremy Nordquist

NE-SD-07

There are only two candidates running to replace term-limited State Senator John Synowiecki in Omaha’s Legislative District 07 – Jeremy Nordquist and Christopher Moles. Nordquist has been working under Synowiecki for years, putting his legislative expertise to work on behalf of the same constituents whose votes he now seeks.

That experience paints a stark contrast with Moles, who’s tried to make up for his lack of ties to the community by piggy-backing on efforts to save Rosenblatt Stadium and redevelop Omaha’s downtown. None of that hides the fact that his own website reveals more familiarity with the property taxes paid in his home state of California than here in Nebraska. Nor does it justify Moles bragging about his endorsement by anti-government extremist Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform.

The choice between a common sense progressive like Jeremy Nordquist or a stooge for Grover Norquist should be a clear one for District 7 voters. But, Moles has already dumped $20,000 of his own money into the race, making it clear he’s willing to buy a seat he isn’t going to win on the issues. To fight back, Nordquist needs our support.

Brenda Council

NE-SD-11

We’re happy to defer to State Senator Ernie Chambers’ judgment on who will best represent the interests of the community he’s served for the last 38 years. Of the candidates seeking to replace him in North Omaha’s Legislative District 11, Chambers told The Reader Brenda Council is “the one most likely to do the right thing.”

In her prior service on Omaha’s School Board and its City Council, Brenda Council has already proven herself throughout the community. She twice put up remarkable challenges running for mayor against Hal Daub, coming up just short of forever changing the face of Omaha politics. As much as Nebraska will lose with the legendary Chambers term-limited, Council will prove a formidable presence in her own right, offering a much different style but a commitment to many of the same principles.

Chambers was so powerful a force in the Legislature that some suggested he single-handedly served as the Unicameral’s second chamber. No one else can come close to filling those shoes. Council will play a different role – perhaps oddly paralleling her own last name – but she too can be trusted to speak with a strong voice from which the entire state will benefit.
