Colorados Seventh Congressional District is believed by many to be the number one race in the country, and a key chance for an important Democratic pick up. The sitting Congressman, Bob Beauprez®, first won his seat in 2002 by just 121 votes out of 173,000 cast. He used the seat as a rubber stamp for Tom Delay, voting with Delay 94% of the time, accepting large donations from Delays PAC, and contributing large amounts to Delay’s legal defense. Beauprez has vacated the seat now so that he can make a bid for the Governor’s mansion, and we have an excellent chance to get a Democrat elected. Ed Perlmutter lives and was raised in this district, and served it for eight years as a State Senator. While in the Colorado Senate he served as President Pro Tem, and was part of the first team to wrest control from the Republicans since Kennedy was in office. He faces a much less experienced man named Rick O’Donnell, who would normally be a non-factor, but Dick Cheney and George Bush have both made trips to this district to try and keep it in Republican hands. ODonnell’s high profile guests have helped him gain an edge in fundraising, but the netroots can turn that around. Ed has local support, and many political allies in the state, but if he is going to win this one, we will have to show that we are just as aware of the national importance of winning this seat as the Republicans have proven to be.Please do your part to tip the scales in this important swing district in this swing state, and help get momentum moving that can restore checks and balances to the U.S. Congress.
