Prop. 4 seeks to legislate family communications, but overlooks the sad reality that unfortunately, some teens live in dangerous or abusive households. Those teens have real reasons for not being able to talk to their parents when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, and to force them to notify their parents regardless puts them in real danger. Scared, pregnant teens that feel that they can't go to their parents and can't go to a doctor will take matters into their own hands and try to self-induce an abortion, seek a back alley abortion, or consider suicide. Prop. 4 puts their lives directly at risk.

In California, teens are currently able to talk to their parents, a family member, a friend, a teacher, a counselor, or any adult, if they feel safe doing so. Prop. 4 wouldn't change their lives, but would damage the lives of the teens that don't feel safe talking to their parents. The California Teachers Association, California Nurses Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics (California), and Planned Parenthood are all urging us to vote NO on Prop. 4. The most important thing is whether teens can get the health care they need, safely and securely.
