In 1969, the same summer as the "Stonewall" demonstration in New York that created a sense of "gay community," Ron Schwizer and Doug Kimmel had a wedding performed by a Presbyterian minister at the University of Colorado Protestant Chapel in Boulder.

Of course, it was not a "legal" marriage then or now. But if Maine becomes another state where same-sex marriage is legal, Ron and Doug will be married after 40 years as a couple, but "strangers" according to the law of Maine and the U.S.

They have lived in Maine for many years and have made significant contributions to the life of their small coastal community.

On August 19 they plan a wedding reception to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. In addition to many friends and neighbors, they are inviting others who share a positive view toward marriage equality.

The reception will be at the Pierre Monteux School in Hancock, Maine from 5 to 7 PM. Contributions for the "No on One" referendum campaign are encouraged -- either on this website, or at the reception.

For more information about the wedding, see page 22 at: http://www.apadivision44.org/publications/2006spring.pdf
