Flying Finn runs for Denise
I know Denise has been running hard in her race to become the next Iowa Secretary of Agriculture. Since she has been working so diligently for more than a year now, I figured I could do some running of my own â and help Deniseâs campaign along the way.
I may not run like my fellow Finn Paavo Nurmi â the original âFlying Finnâ – who won 12 Olympic medals. Still, it has been my dream to run a marathon one of these days. I donât feel ready to run a full marathon at this point of time, but I have decided to go for a half-marathon as part of the Des Moines Marathon event October 15, 2006.
During the last five weeks of my race preparation, my training plan calls for a minimum of 97 miles of running. Then there will be the 13 miles on October 15. I have donated to Deniseâs campaign a dollar for every one of the 110 miles I will be running in those five weeks. Of course, on October 15 I will be running in my OâBrien for Secretary of Agriculture T-shirt.
I urge my friends and anyone else who wants Iowa to have a true forward-looking Secretary of Agriculture to donate to Deniseâs campaign Feel free to base your donation on the value you give to each mile Iâll be running. You may value my efforts at $2 per mile or at 10 cents per mile â it doesnât matter. Every little bit helps. Or even better, consider joining me on October 15 to run for Denise.
