Send Me to Maine for My Volunteer Vacation Oct 24-Nov 1, 2009 In May, Maine became the fifth state in the nation to win marriage equality. This means same sex couples are given the dignity and respect they deserve to be able to marry the person they love. Well, fight is not over. Opponents want to turn back the clock by placing a referendum – modeled after California's Proposition 8 – on this November’s ballot. With just over 50 days until the vote, the countdown is on. In the weeks ahead, volunteers will be needed in key places in the Portland area and are asked to help Maine by taking a Volunteer Vacation to work on the No on 1 campaign.
During the month leading up to the election, the campaign will be hosting a team of highly motivated volunteers to serve as full-time, volunteer campaign staff. I, along with many other individuals (including many of my co-workers from Equality California) are answering Maine's call for help. This is where I need your help.
.
In order for me to get to there, I need to raise at least $800 for travel expenses. This money will cover my plane ticket from California, transportation while in Maine, and living expenses. I am currently working on getting donated housing for the week that I'm there. (The cost of a rental car alone is $200.)
Many people may ask why supporting Maine is so important to our efforts here in California. As many of you may know, we are working to repeal Prop 8 here in California, either in 2010 or 2012. No matter what year we're back on the ballot, those of us who believe in equality for all people need to take a stand against this hateful ballot initiative lead by the religious right, right now. A loss in Maine would give those people trying to deny us our rights here in California that much more ammunition to use against us in our fight towards repealing Prop 8. Conversely, a win in Maine would mean a lot for our struggle here. I gave a lot of time and tears to the No on 8 Campaign this past year so I know what people in Maine are going through. The people of Maine need my help.
