Dear Friends, Colleagues and Family,

I usually do not send requests for support and donations, however, I feel that this is one of the most important Congressional races to be held in 2008 and I seek your support in helping to send Tom to Congress from Virginia’s 5th.

Tom’s vision for America is precisely what this country needs and what our Congress needs. This race is representative of a larger movement within our country, particularly within our rural districts, whose voters have over the last six years turned a cold shoulder to the politics of fear and begun to support a progressive platform. Please join me in helping to send Tom to Congress in 2008. Your contributions, however small or large, are essential to the success of this campaign. Thank you for your support.

Cheers, Michael

Courage to Fight for the Common Good

I believe that America has a decision to make. We can complain while we witness the erosion of our job security, our national security, our values and our commitment to the common good. Or, like generations before us, we can meet the challenge to make America greater than it has ever been.

I believe that our district can lead this fight. The next decade will decide the next century of America’s leadership in the world and the standard of living for Americans. We must invest in our farmers to make them the frontline fighters in the new struggle for oil independence. We must invest in our troops and veterans, our intelligence agencies and our diplomatic corps to answer the threat of Islamist extremism. We must eliminate extreme poverty that kills 30,000 precious lives every day. We must invest in the education and infrastructure that will make our district competitive in a global economy. As it has since our nation’s founding, our district can show the courage, innovation, and conviction to lead the way.

But what are we prepared to do? Our nation and our communities draw their strength from the hard work, ingenuity, and wisdom of the American people. But our political leaders have fallen short. We need leaders with the courage of conviction that we deserve, that our troops and veterans deserve, that our farmers deserve, that our children deserve.

We can win. America must lead the global community to victory over Islamist extremism by championing the common good. We will win if we are guided more by the lessons of September 12th than by the emotions of September 11th. Sept. 11 was a day of fear, violence, confusion, and vulnerability – a battlefield of Osama Bin Laden’s choosing. But we were blessed with September 12th – a day that belonged to everything great in America and the world, a day defined by our common humanity and a commitment to our national purpose. The world understood that their lives would rise or fall with ours. We will win when we fight on our own terms, not on Bin Laden’s.

America has always been strongest when our culture champions the common good. America is strongest when we answer the call to love and protect our neighbor as we would ourselves. The security and soul of our nation depend on knowing we are in this together.
