Democrats at our best stand for participatory democracy, caring community, standing with the oppressed, and a foreign policy based on human rights. We are for universal health care, social security, public education, a progressive tax system, sensible gun control, worker rights, a living wage, limited corporate power, and equality under the law for all persons regardless of race, class, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, or degree of ableness. We are strong on the environment and on economics for the common good. We balance our commitment to order and security at home and abroad with a constant vigilance for our civil liberties and the Bill of Rights, and a vision of America as the beacon of freedom and the rule of law, not torture. We understand the communitarian claims of living in a free and democratic society; if it’s going to work for the next generation, no person is an island unencumbered with social responsibilities. It is better for many to have enough than a few to have excessive wealth, privilege, and power. We see a legitimate, necessary role for government and for the United Nations. We believe in the potential of people, when given the chance to express that potential. We are Democrats, and we’re not going to let America go the way of the Roman Empire or a two-bit banana republic or the Bush/Cheney vision of widening class differences, rule by the elite, and perpetual war.
I encourage you to put your money where your values are and support Democrats at the local, regional, and national levels. Remembering the lessons of 2000, I encourage you to support progressive voices within the Democratic Party and avoid deluting our political power by supporting a Third Party.
During the primaries I am supporting Bill Richardson as my choice for President in 2008. He has the experience and “common man” appeal that can win the votes of Independents and moderate Republicans in a national election, while consistently supportive of a progressive agenda. I like the fact that he is Hispanic.
Finally, remember the arts and especially music as an important medium for political discourse.
