Warning of the need for urgent action on his Social Security plan, Bush says the “crisis is now” for a system even the most pessimistic observers say will take in more in taxes than it pays out in benefits well into the next decade.

In a Dec. 20 news conference, the president explained. “Many times, legislative bodies will not react unless the crisis is apparent, crisis is upon them,” Bush said, discussing Social Security. “And so for a period of time, we’re going to have to explain to members of Congress that crisis is here.”

For 70 years Social Security has been a success. Social Security is in a healthier financial situation now than it has been for most of its history.

Here’s how you can join up:
1) We will mark the occassion with an email press release to 30,000 of our favorite people in the media. We need quotes for the press release, so we’re taking it open source. Post your declaration to waging war against those gutting Social Security, and place a link in the comments here. We’ll be quoting our favorite posts, as well as creating a huge Social Security Defenders blogroll that you’ll be added to (the blogrolling code will be made freely available). You can also leave quotes in the comments of this post.
2) Next, we need you to update your blog template with our gif. We also need links to this site in your blogroll with the linked text “social security” so we can make sure we’re found by the people they scare. If you have extra template space, put the Social Security Defenders blogroll up.
3) Sign up for our email list, we will be doing the online, rapid-response for Social Security during the Inauguration and State of the Union.
4) Use our Letters to the Editor tool and you might win an appearance on Air America (check their blog for details).
5) Get creative in doing everything you can to spread the word. Post in our forums. Organize locally. Tell us and we’ll promote you as best we can.
