Friends and Shoe Lovers: As you all know, I love me some shoes. I’m too embarrassed to type how many pairs I own, even if I could count that high. You’ve shared my new shoe joy, comforted me when Rupert ate my favorite black sandals, listen to me rant against Crocs. Now I’m asking you to support someone else’s shoes: Steve Novick’s. You probably know that Jake’s running Steve’s campaign to be the next senator from Oregon. You probably also have heard me complain about that (a special shoutout to my carpool, who has put up with much more than their fair share in that respect). My only solace these last few months has been that I believe that Steve would be a great Senator and that he’s in the best position of anyone running to beat Gordon Smith. (Okay, I have also taken solace in chocolate, Cheetos, and retail therapy.) Steve’s an utterly authentic guy who truly believes that appearances shouldn’t matter. Jake, perhaps a bit more cynical, has been doing what he can to transform him into a shiny-Senator type. But Steve just doesn’t fit the part, and that’s a really good thing for Oregon and for our nation. I’d rather have a politician that cares about making America work for everyone than one who‘s well-manicured. But one thing I can’t tolerate is ugly shoes. You see, Steve’s always wears Doc Martens. Yep, the same Doc Martens that some of us remember from our college grunge phase. I think we can all agree that those are some ugly shoes. Maybe not Croc ugly, but ugly nonetheless. The ONLY reason that I’m not more outraged is that Steve has tough shoe luck. He’s short (I mean SHORT), he’s missing some leg bones, and he has very small and differently sized feet. This makes it very difficult for him to find comfy shoes. Some of us would sacrifice comfort for beauty, but not Steve. You can count on him to find workable solutions to hard truths, from shoe-buying to health care, education, and environmental crises such as global warming. (For more information about his positions and policies, visit Steve’s web site.) But I think a Senator might be able to afford custom-made shoes, which cost around what Carrie Bradshaw pays for a pair of Manolos. So I’ve set a goal to raise that much to help Steve make it to the Senate. Every little bit counts, but I’m hoping that each of you will give at least $10—-less than you’d pay for some flip-flops, and a whole lot less than the working people of this country will pay if Gordon Smith is reelected. Will you help me help Steve get out of those awful Doc Martens and into the Senate? Heather Lou
