Sweep New York

There is a movement afoot to sweep the Republicans out of NY State's Congressional contingent. I think this is unrealistic to some degree, but in this year of Bush's plummetting approval ratings, it is just possible that if we aim high, we just might win big. So, let's aim high. Here are the NY State Congressional races to watch...ones where we really should try to sweep out the Republicans. NY-24 and NY-29 are the MOST winable, but my favorites are NY-13 and NY-03 because if we won these, we will have achieved a complete Dem take over of the House Reps. from NYC and Long Island. That would be COOL! All of these SHOULD be winable if we pushed really hard. You can read more analysis here.

I have now also added some state senate races that we need to win this year.

I start with this race because it is closest to home and is the ONE Congressional district within NY City held by a Republican. Vito Fossella is a darling of Bush, Cheney and Rove. They have helped him fundraise and have insulted NYC right in front of Fossella, inplying that liberals encourage terrorism, and Fossella says nothing. Furthermore, Fossella's corruption is starting to catch up with him. Currently there is one Dem candidate running against Fossella, lawyer Steve Harrison. This district straddles part of Brooklyn and all of Staten Island. This seat was held by a Democrat before Fossella, but it is the most GOP part of NYC. Our chances? People have said both in 2004 and now in 2006 that this should be winable. But we have yet to take advantage of that winability. If you want to give me the biggest late Birthday present possible, donate to win this race. I would be THRILLED to see ALL of NYC's Reps be Dems.

I put this one second because it just got interesting. The GOP incumbent, Sherwood Boehlert, has just dropped out making this AN OPEN SEAT!! That makes it a damned good pick up chance since it is only weakly Republican. Several Dems are vying for the chance to take this one from the Republicans. Let's set it up for the primary winner to be ready for a solid challenge. This is our best shot, folks. Don't lose it!

This race is in the increasing Dem friendly Suffolk and Nassau counties and is the last Republican seat on Long Island. We have been chipping away their hold on Long Island and THIS is the last seat. Can we chase them out of Long Island? It is unclear whether we have a strong candidate coming forward, but we will see. This could be another lost opportunity if we aren't careful.

Randy Kuhl's seat. Like NY-24, this one is our best shot. Kuhl is up against Fighting Dem Eric Massa (who saw active service in Desert storm 1). This one deserves our UTMOST attention. Eric Massa would be kick ass in Congress and we can send him there.

Sue Kelly's seat. The district is drifting away from the Republicans so, once again, with Bush's numbers in free fall, we have a chance. Five Dems are vying for this one and probably our chances against Kelly depend on who wins. Donations to the general election fund will really help the winner of the primary.

John Sweeny's seat. The likely Dem candidate appeals to some Republicans who are dissatisfied with the way the nation is going...but it is a strong Repub seat. However, it is becoming very apparent that Sweeny is part of the Republican Culture of Corruption that America is starting to reject. As Sweeny's scandals catch up with him, this could be a real surprise pick up for the Dems if we put our minds to it. I like our chances here, though it is by NO means the "should be" pick up like NY-24 and -29. But we HAVE to make a good go of it.

John McHugh's seat. Bush only got 51% of vote in 04 here and with his numbers in free fall and Republican corruption making headlines, McHugh is vulnerable. This is winable, if all goes well for us. Bob Johnson is our man to win this district.

James Walsh's seat. Kerry won this district so we SHOULD be able to take it. It hasn't gotten enough attention yet, which may mean we are in the process of losing this one through our own inattention. BUT, it could be the sleeper of the season. The Republicans could lose this because of their own negatives. Let's not ignore this one.

Tom Reynold's seat. Another one that, if we give it attention, should be winable. Like NY-25 we could lose this through inattention or the Republicans could lose it due to their own sleaze and Bush's anchor-like dropping popularity.
