This webpage is intended as another venue for teachers and university professors, in particular, to help Democratic candidates in some of the most important races in the country. I’ve tried to pick a handful of races in which contributors can be confident that any money is both truly needed and potentially significant. These races are neither long-shots nor sure-things: rather, they are all just extremely competitive. And in each case, because of the significance of the race, money is pouring in from Republican sources. All of these races, furthermore, are taking place in battleground or swing states, involve incumbent Republicans (either trying to stay in office or, in Minnesota, to move from the House to the Senate) and have progressive, ambitious and generally young Democrats.

A race close enough that contributions can make a real difference; a candidate who is being outspent - unfairly - by the heavily-funded Republican incumbent; the significance of this battleground-state Senate race is enormous. Talent and McCaskill, perhaps as much as any two candidates this election cycle, are competing at the very faultline of our current ideological divide.

Mark Kennedy is a hard-core right-wing member of the Republican House majority. Klobuchar is one of two progressive candidates (together with Claire McCaskill) who can grow the ranks of both Democratic and female senators in 2006. Klobuchar needs grassroots support to counter the huge amount of money that Kennedy has raised.

Patricia Madrid is in a classic, hard-fought battle against an ambitious, heavily financed Republican incumbent in the House. This is exactly the kind of race Democrats need to win in order to potentially transform the current political alignment. She can use every dollar of contributions—if only to counteract the hundreds of thousands raised by both Bush and Cheney for her opponent.

Mike DeWine is one of the least popular Republican incumbents in the Senate. Ohio is, of course, a divided, important and heavily contested state. Sherrod Brown is considered one of the most progressive candidates in this election cycle. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has already given DeWine over $650,000 in contributions.
