Running against an incumbent member of Congress is difficult to say the least. Incumbents are elected upwards of 90% of the time. In 2006, Democratic challengers defied those odds and took over both the House and Senate. In 2008, we are going to grow those margins even more. But we need your help. Please, donate to one or all of the five challengers below. Their challenge is tough, but with our help they can all overcome the odds and represent a new, Progressive wave in Washington.
Even $5.00 can help a candidate. Showing strong fundraising numbers and a broad range of support is essential to their success, and to ours. Take a moment and ask yourself a few questions. Do you want universal health care? Do you want American troops out of Iraq? Do you want to buy products without worrying about contamination? If you answered yes, you should consider donating.
$5.00 could be the difference between victory and defeat for these candidates. And one vote could be the difference between victory and defeat of the programs we seek. We are all counting on you and your generosity. Help these challengers face their challenge. Thank you.

Donna Edwards

MD-04 (Map)

In 2006, Donna Edwards had the courage to stand up against on of the Democratic Party’s most corrupt members of Congress, Al Wynn. Her loss to Wynn was especially heartbreaking. Her supporters were attacked at debates and at the polls, and there were allegations of voter fraud.
Donna deserves our support. She’s running against Wynn again, and this time she has a better chance. But she needs our resources. Donna Edwards supports withdrawal from Iraq and stands in opposition to Wynn and his special interest allies.

Gordon Smith is a terrible Senator. Pro-war, pro-corporations, pro-Neanderthal judges. Yet until a few weeks ago, it appeared he was going to get a pass. Not so, said Jeff Merkley.
Merkley is a progressive Democrat seeking to overthrow the most conservative senator on the West Coast. This will be one of the toughest Senate races in the nation, but your dollars will go farther because Oregon is a relatively low-cost state. Please help Jeff Merkley help us. Let’s build the road to 60 votes through Oregon.
UPDATE Today Jeff Merkley called for the impeachment of Alberto Gonzalez. Let’s signal our support by sending him some campaign cash!

Another heartbreaking, narrow loss in 2006. This was one of the closest, nastiest battlegrounds of the year. Mary Jo came so close to defeating Deb Pryce, one of the top Republican leaders, that Pryce decided just this week she wouldn’t run again.
Let’s send Mary Jo some love. This is a marginal Republican seat and without an incumbent, in another Democratic wave year, this shouldn’t even be close. But if we don’t invest, Republicans might smell blood and find a strong candidate. Let’s keep that from happening.

Darcy Burner was a true Netroots candidate in 2006. She ran very strong in a Republican district against one of the few remaining Republicans in the Northwest.
Darcy is young, energetic, progressive, and is a true “change” candidate. A former Microsoft executive, she understands technology and would be an unbelieveable benefit to us in the Congress. Let’s send Darcy some change.

Tom Allen

ME-Sen (Map)

Tom Allen is a strong, progressive Democrat. He’s against the Iraq War, he’s for fair trade policies, and he supports universal health care. His opponent, Susan Collins, is a Joe Lieberman acolyte, a “moderate” Republican who votes with George Bush on all the important issues.
Susan Collins wants her constituents to think she’s more like her colleague, Olympia Snowe. It’s our job to show she’s not even close. A vote for Collins is a vote for George Bush and Joe Lieberman. Allen will need every cent he can get to overthrow this cabal. We did it last year, against a true, liberal Republican.
Let’s make Maine 2008 a repeat of Rhode Island 2006.
