Tom Udall is as sincere and decent a politician as you’ll ever find. He subjects himself to the relentless demands of political life not because of ego or self-promotion, but because of deeply held beliefs that compel him to make the world a better place.
His record speaks volumes. Over two terms as Attorney General of New Mexico, he led efforts to clean up mining operations, he pushed successfully for legislation to ensure that developers made subdivisions that weren’t destined to become slums, and he pushed (successfully) to strengthen laws to reduce drunk driving and domestic violence.
Since 1998, Tom has been the congressman from Norhern New Mexico. In that capacity he has accomplished a great deal for his district (preserving the magnificent Valle Vidal from needless oil and gas development and fighting for New Mexico’s veterans). He has also made the right votes-prescient votes-on national issues. He stood against the tide of anti-Axis-of-Evil fervor and opposed the Patriot Act. He knew it posed unwarranted infringements on our civil liberties. He ALWAYS opposed the invasion of Iraq, and voted accordingly. He has also been a staunch advocate for a transition to renewable energy.
Tom is running to fill the Senate seat vacated by Republican Pete Domenici, who held it for decades. The Republicans will undoubtedly pour extensive resources into this race in a desperate attempt to keep the seat. Tom can win it. He has no primary opposition to speak of, and current polling shows him with a significant lead over either of his potential Republican opponents.
Those potential opponents are Cong. Steve Pearce from southern New Mexico and Cong. Heather Wilson, who now represents Albuquerque. Pearce is a hard-right conservative. He was recently quoted as saying he believes we’ll need troops in Iraq for another 50 years. Heather Wilson has struggled to hold her ABQ seat. In her last campaign-a very tight race-Wilson infamously placed a call to pressure U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to speed an investigation of potential corruption among prominent Democrats in the state. The speculation and circumstances suggest she made the call-widely criticized as inappropriate-in an effort to help her struggling campaign.
So, I apologize for the long-winded pitch, but Tom is exactly the kind of person you want in the Senate. He can win this race. But, he is going to need all the help he can get, including yours. He is also my uncle, so I can vouch for him personally. Please consider making a donation to his campaign.
