True_blue_200px_2When Republican Sen. Pete Domenici decided not to seek another term, Democrats were given a unique opportunity to create a "True Blue" New Mexico in terms of our congressional representation. All three of our current representatives to the U.S. House gave up their seats to run for Senate, resulting in three wide-open congressional contests. In addition, Democrats now have an excellent chance to grab Domenici's seat.

True Blue New Mexico is an effort by the progressive netroots in New Mexico, including New Mexico FBIHOP and Democracy for New Mexico, to help elect Democrats in each race.

U.S. Senate: If Rep. Tom Udall (NM-03) wins this seat, he’ll join fellow Dem Jeff Bingaman and turn the entire New Mexico Senate delegation True Blue. Udall is running against Steve Pearce, the GOP’s current ultraconservative Congressman in NM-02, and polling shows Udall with a healthy lead -- but we can't take anything for granted. Conservative 527s like The Club for Growth were active in the GOP primary, backing Pearce successfully over current NM-01 Congresswoman Heather Wilson. This will be a fight to the finish and Repub donors, like the awful Clayton Williams, will be pumping cash into the race like there’s no tomorrow. And there isn’t.

First District: In the Albuquerque area, we’ve got a strong candidate in Martin Heinrich, who won a four-way primary race by a comfortable margin. He’ll face the current Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, a Bush crony. This is Heather Wilson’s old District and last time she won by less than 900 votes. It’s expected to be a very close race again this year in a District that can go either way. A swing-District victory here would be sweet indeed.

Second District: Down South in a generally conservative District now represented by Steve Pearce, moderate Dem Harry Teague will take on right-wing restaurant chain owner Ed Tinsley. NM-02 has more registered Dems than Repubs, and in a year when Obama and the Dems are expected to have a banner year, we have the best chance ever to turn this seat True Blue.

Third District: In this strongly Democratic District in Northern New Mexico, Ben R. Lujan, the son of the New Mexico Legislature’s Speaker of the House, won a six-way Dem primary going away. This is Udall’s current District and Lujan will face a weak GOP opponent in Daniel East, although at least one independent has also decided to run.

We can transform the Land of Enchantment into True Blue New Mexico, but we need your help. Much of New Mexico is rural and low-income. With so many open seats at stake in one election cycle, campaign funds may well be tight unless we all pitch in to fund these candidates. Thanks!

President

If we’re to be successful in creating a True Blue New Mexico, the Dem candidate for President must win New Mexico. Our state has been a genuine swing state over the past few presidential election cycles and this year the race is once again expected to be incredibly close. If Obama wins, we have a much better chance of taking the House and Senate seats. By the same token, if we win the Congressional seats, Obama will get a boost in his quest to win the state.

Rep. Tom Udall has served Northern New Mexico admirably since 1999. He voted against the Authorization of War in Iraq and the Patriot Act, and has been a staunch supporter of environmental rights and many other progressive ideas. He’s focusing on ending the occupation in Iraq, rebuilding the middle class and expanding health care and education benefits to veterans in this race.

Martin Heinrich was a progressive voice on the Albuquerque City Council and also served as Council President. He spoke out against the Iraq War from the beginning, showing true leadership on the issue. Heinrich has also received numerous awards for his environmental work. We must defeat his opponent Darren White, who served as George Bush’s campaign chair in Bernalillo County in 2004. White is currently trying to redefine himself as an “independent” Republican. We can’t let him do that. He’s a Bush crony through and through.

NM-02 (Map)

Harry Teague is a former County Commissioner in Lea County, in New Mexico’s so-called “oil patch.” Having quit high school to help support his family when times were tough, Teague has built a very profitable oil services company over the years and is known for treating his employees like family, including paying the entire cost of their health insurance. Teague, who grew up in Hobbs, has deep and wide roots in the District and is well known and respected on both sides of the aisle. He can supplement his campaign funding out of his own pocket, if necessary. His opponent, restaurant magnate Ed Tinsley, will spend up a storm to keep this seat in the GOP column.

Ben Ray is ending his tenure on the powerful New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, where he also served as Chair. While on the PRC, Lujan was instrumental in helping pass critical environmental and renewable energy initiatives and he’s been endorsed by numerous environmental groups. His populist views have also earned him the backing of a long list of unions. He faces a relative unknown GOP candidate but at least one independent will run for the seat. We need to make sure we keep Tom Udall’s old seat True Blue.
