Democracy for Virginia is harnessing the energy of this year's Presidential primary campaign in Virginia and using it to fuel a long-term effort to Turn Virginia Blue!

Thank you to everyone who attended Democracy for Virginia's first Turn Virginia Blue Barbecue on Sunday, August 29 in Arlington. Over 230 people attended and we raised over $4,150 for Virginia candidates and $1,400 for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee!

We were so honored to spend the day with Al Weed, our great Dean Dozen candidate from VA-5. James Socas, our second Dean Dozen candidate, also addressed the crowd, as did two other great Democratic congressional candidates, Ken Longmyer from VA-11 and Congressman Jim Moran from VA-8.

The most recent Zogby poll from Virginia showed Bush and Kerry in a virtual tie - Kerry is trailing Bush by just one point. Every dollar that we can contribute to our Congressional candidates in Virginia will fund critical visibility, canvassing, and GOTV efforts around Virginia. Please continue to donate what you can to work to Turn Virginia Blue!

Al Weed, a courageous and proud Democrat, is challenging turncoat (former Democrat) incumbent Virgil Goode (R). Democracy for Virginia is proud to support Al Weed, our first member of the Dean Dozen from Virginia.

A small farmer and leader in the Virginia wine industry, Al Weed's credentials combine decades of decorated military service with degrees in public policy and experience in public service. Al's life story is truly inspiring. He is running an aggressive grassroots campaign throughout VA-5. Monthly DFA Meetups are held at Al Weed's HQ in Charlottesville.

Al Weed is confirmed to attend the Turn Virginia Blue Barbecue on Sunday, August 29!

FRIDAY, AUGUST 27 UPDATE: We are delighted to announce that today James Socas has been chosen by Howard Dean and Democracy for America as our second and final Dean Dozen candidate from Virginia! Democracy for Virginia is proud to support both James Socas and Al Weed as our Dean Dozen candidates from Virginia.

James Socas (D) is running the most aggressive campaign in over a decade to try to unseat long term incumbent Rep. Frank Wolf (R) in the 10th district.

He has reached out to supporters at DFA Meetups and numerous "friendraisers" in the district, earning him early support from dedicated volunteers and donors. His phenomenal fundraising during 2nd quarter as well as his strength as a candidate has attracted national attention. James was given the honor of speaking at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

We are delighted to announce that James Socas will also be attending the Turn Virginia Blue Barbecue on August 29! In addition to supporting his campaign with a contribution, he asks that BBQ attendees also bring donations for a local shelter for victims of domestic violence. Needed items include toiletries, gently used clothing, and household items. Campaign staffers will collect items at the park!

Image of Bobby Scott

Bobby Scott

VA-03 (Map)

When I think of an ideal Democratic member of Congress during the Bush administration, I think of one who would stand up to the Bush administration's reckless "borrow and spend" tax policies. One who would articulate the danger of our growing national debt while balancing the priorities of national security and domestic investment. I think of one who would stand up for civil liberties in opposing the Patriot Act. I think of one who would fight for full funding of NCLB and oppose voucher and other schemes to divert public money from public education. I think of one who would stand up for national defense but strongly oppose a poorly planned unilateral invasion of Iraq.

I think of Congressman Bobby Scott, who is serving his 6th term in Congress, and who we need to send back for a 7th term!

Bobby Scott, the only African-American member of Congress from Virginia (indeed, only the second African-American to be elected to Congress from Virginia since Reconstruction) and the only member of Congress with Filipino heritage, is a staunch defender of equal rights for all Americans. He serves on the House Budget Committee (where he is a vociferous deficit hawk!) and the House Judiciary Committee. A graduate of Harvard College and BC Law, he was a practicing lawyer and served in the National Guard and Army Reserves before entering politics.

After running unopposed in 2002, Bobby Scott faces Republican challenger Winsome Sears in November. She is a staunch right-wing Christian ideologue who, after becoming the first African-American Republican woman to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly, said that God told her to leave office after one term.

Congressman Bobby Scott has a very loyal constituency in VA-3 and is expected to win, but our support will guarantee his win and will fund aggressive GOTV efforts to turn out Democratic voters in this important district. Democracy for Virginia is especially proud to have worked with Congressman Bobby Scott in his tireless and courageous support for Howard Dean in the primary, and we are proud to support his re-election campaign.

Image of Jim Moran

Jim Moran

VA-08 (Map)

Incumbent Congressman Jim Moran has served his constituents in VA-8 with courage and conviction for many terms and is an effective member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. He was supported in the June primary by hundreds of Democrats who have worked with Jim since his entry into politics over 20 years ago, and those longtime supporters were joined by many newly-energized activists in VA-8, including many who remembered Jim's courageous support for Gov. Howard Dean in the presidential primary.

Gov. Dean enthusiastically endorsed Jim Moran in June 4, helping him to his recent primary victory.

Although VA-8 is a Democratic stronghold, Jim's opponent, Lisa Marie Cheney (R) is likely to go very negative, and Jim will need our support to counter her attacks. Most importantly, the best chance we have of turning Virginia blue this year is increasing voter turnout in Democratic strongholds like VA-8. Your contribution will help with critical Northern Virginia phone banking and GOTV efforts that will help Kerry/Edwards win!

We are proud to announce that Congressman Jim Moran will be an honored guest at the Turn Virginia Blue Barbecue!

Image of Rick Boucher

Rick Boucher

VA-09 (Map)

Incumbent Rep. Rick Boucher is a great Democratic representative of one of the largest Congressional districts in the Eastern U.S., encompassing more than 20 counties in Virginia. He is a popular 11-term incumbent in this district in the southwest corner of Virginia, with West Virginia to the North, Kentucky and Tennessee to the West, and North Carolina to the South. It is critical that Democrats hold on to this seat, and many Democracy for Virginia volunteers are actively supporting Rick Boucher's campaign.

While Boucher won handily in 2002 with 66% of the vote, he faces a potentially much stronger challenger this year in Kevin Triplett, a NASCAR executive who rewards his donors and volunteers with signed NASCAR memorabilia and even such unique gifts as race-used tires. Triplett has received significant support from national Republicans, including visits from Dick Cheney.

We must make sure Rick Boucher holds on to this seat! And for those of us who are Internet geeks, Boucher is our voice as the co-chair of the Congressional Internet Caucus.

Image of Jonathan Menefee

Jonathan Menefee

VA-04 (Map)

Randy Forbes (R) is serving his 2nd term in Congress, and won with 98% of the vote in 2002, since no Democrat stood up to oppose him. Jonathan Menefee (D) refused to allow him to run unopposed again! He is out in the 4th district every day, registering new voters and reminding them that yes, Virginia, there are Democrats in the 4th district, and they are determined to win!

The son of a diesel mechanic and a postal carrier, Jonathan is a 25 year old law student who works with his brothers in his family's heavy material hauling company. He worked on John Edwards' primary campaign and is working hard every day to increase Democratic voter turnout in VA-4.

Image of Ken Longmyer

Ken Longmyer

VA-11 (Map)

Ken Longmyer (D) is determined to make sure that all voters in VA-11 know that Rep. Tom Davis (R) is no moderate. A former public school teacher, Ken Longmyer is a career Foreign Service Officer who has served in Jerusalem, Bonn, Bremen, and Stockholm. After retiring from the Foreign Service, he has served as the Director of Foreign Affairs at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a Clinton administration advisor to the Bosnian Peace Implementation, and the State Department's Director for Holocaust Issues and Special Assistant for UN Counter-terrorism and for Homeland Security.

While Tom Davis (R) is serving his 5th term and won with 83% of the vote in 2002, the people of VA-11 are learning that Tom Davis is becoming more and more extreme in his right-wing positions. High Democratic turnout in VA-11 in Northern Virginia is critical to Kerry/Edwards success in November - please help support aggressive voter outreach and GOTV!

We are delighted to announce that Ken Longmyer will be attending the Turn Virginia Blue Barbecue on Sunday, August 29! Please come to meet Ken - you will be impressed!

Image of David Ashe

David Ashe

VA-02 (Map)

David Ashe (D) is challenging two-term incumbent Rep. Ed Schrock (R) in Virginia's 2nd district, which includes much of Virginia's Tidewater region, including Virginia Beach and the eastern panhandle of Virginia.

Many pundits have written off the 2nd district for Democrats, but not David Ashe, and not the many Democrats who have joined to support his efforts. His unique credentials make him an appealing candidate to many military families in the area. Everything David Ashe does to demonstrate that the Democratic Party represents the best and the brightest in the military will benefit our chances to Turn Virginia Blue this fall.

David Ashe, a former Marine Corps lawyer who reached the rank of captain before leaving active duty in 2001, was redeployed in 2002 and deployed to Kuwait. He returned briefly to the US in 2002 to marry, and was redeployed to Iraq in 2003, where he led the development of a new judicial system as the sole coalition legal representative in one region of Iraq. When he returned to the U.S. in October 2003, he decided to continue serving his country by running for Congress.
