Your support can help put them over the top and show this state that change is blowin’ in the wind.

Pete Ashdown

UT-Sen (Map)

US Senate
Pete Ashdown’s campaign is an important statement in UT. Orrin Hatch is the quintessential old boy rubber-stamp of the Red Right.
Pete is a successful entrepreneur. He founded xmission.com over a decade ago as UT’s first ISP. He has a Dean-like grassroots campaign, which has greatly extended the use of the internet. He is a Utah native and has and lives strong progressive values. He is very well versed in government and the issues, presents extremely speaking engagements, town meetings, interviews and debates, and is committed to life-long public service.

Christian Burridge

UT-03 (Map)

US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
NOTE: The Salt Lake Tribune has endorsed the candidacy of Christian Burridge over incumbent Chris Cannon. This is a huge development for Burridge, who is running in a district that has a long history of voting democratic prior to Cannon’s stint.
Here’s Christian’s philosophy, from his own website:
(He) knows the importance of protecting our constitution and the process of the rule of law. He is proud to be a citizen of this great nation where an individual is protected under a system of governance that ensures freedom and justice. With special interests slowly eroding away these rights, Christian vows that now is the time to ensure the protection of every individual, our families, children, and our future.
I’ve met Christian Burridge and am here to report that he is on his game, so we do have a dog in this fight. Please join me in helping making Chrsitian’s victory so, for his victory is our victory: UT’s third district, the state and the country.

Image of Jim Matheson

Jim Matheson

UT-02 (Map)

US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Matheson has been in office since 1998. His track record is exceptionally moderate, no doubt further right than most progressives would like, but this IS UT and he is a huge improvement over people like Hatch, Bennett, Cannon, Bishop, etc. Mathesom has superior Harvard intelligence, humility and strong native family name (his Dad, George, was a beloved, gasp, two-term Democratic Utah governor (1976-1984), who declined to run for a third term he probably would have won easily).
Jim’s brother Scott was UT Attorney General and the Dean of the U. of UT Law School who was beaten in 2004 by the ka-zillionaire John Huntsman, Jr. for the UT governorship. [In all fairness, Huntsman has been much less partisan than his predecessors AND even taken progressive stances on some politically tough issues, such as the food sales tax.]
Back to Jim Matheson:
Committees: Financial Services, Science, Transportation & Infrastructure.
Education: MBA, University of California Los Angeles, 1987; BA, Government, Harvard University, 1982
Professional Experience: Advocate, Environmental Group;
Owner, Energy Consulting Firm.
Political Experience: Member, United States House of Representatives, 2000-present. Candidate, Utah Congressional House, District 2, 2002.
Caucuses/Non-Legislative Committees:
Co-Chair, Blue Dog Budget Task Force; Co-Chair, Blue Dog Coalition Administration; Democratic Homeland Security Task Force; New Democrat Coalition.

Image of Steve Olsen

Steve Olsen

UT-01 (Map)

US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Perhaps the most useful first thing one can know about Steve Olsen is the booklet he has written, “Why Most Utahns are Democrats But Just Don’t Know It Yet.” The parallel to Thomas Franks’ “What’s Wrong With Kansas” here is Olsen’s assertion that virtually all Utahns, including LDS church members such as himself, have voted against their self-interests in voting Republican. As Steve writes in his Blog:
“Utah’s citizens have largely voted Republican the last twenty years because of the impression that the GOP shares their values on things like abortion, the sanctity of marriage, and the assault of the popular culture on old fashioned family values. My question is simple: Have our votes for Republicans yielded results? Is the American family better off today than two decades ago? The answer is self evident. I know Republicans are truly sincere in their feelings about American family values, but it is clear the approach isn’t working.”
Olsen’s conclusion? While rank & file Republicans keep voting on values-related concerns, all they get back is a single-minded stampede to consolidate wealth. What’s more, Olsen finds, when he looks back to core Utah values, including those conservative native values, he finds a bedrock made of democracy, not plutocracy, or even theocracy. So, when voting Republican, the average Republican Utahn is voting not for himself or his community or even his state; no, the average Utah Republican is unwittingly voting for the wealthy people-the folks who have an inside deal with Orrin Hatch and Steve’s own opponent, Rob Bishop-wealthy people who for the most part don’t even reside in the state!
Steve’s a thoughtful man and I like his thinking. His background as an engineer may explain his analytical precision. For whatever reason, though, here is a descendant of the pioneers who looks at the issues, comes up with sensible answers and realizes Republicans don’t represent him because he’s not one of them! Take a look at his website for a look at his views on the issues.
Mr. Olsen is challenging Representative Rob Bishop in Utah’s first congressional district (Ogden and points North and West). Here is one apt distinction Steve Olsen draws between himself and Mr. Bishop, on the issue of Fiscal Responsibility:
“Congressman Bishop is campaigning on ‘making the tax cuts permanent.’ What tax cuts? There have been the most massive tax increases in our nation’s history the last four years – as long as you include the Grandchild Tax. The Republicans call this the deficit – but just because it’s a deferred tax on our grandchildren, you can’t deny it’s still a tax. It is the most unfair tax in our nation’s history: it’s taxation without representation, it’s a selfish and unjust transfer of wealth from future generations to our own, and our grandchildren have to pay not only the tax, but hundreds of billions more in interest.”
Need we say more…?
Ogden has a strong independent and democratic base. With the national discontent expressed in race after race around the country, our encouragement and support, Steve Olsen can pull off an upset here. Any contribution can make a difference.

Pat Jones

UT-SD-04

Pat Jones is a solid state legislator but is running this time as a Senator for an open seat. As UT is a red state, she always faces stiff competition, and this year is no different.
