<blurb>Imagine your daughters, granddaughters, nieces… keep one of them in mind. Now imagine that she was told at a young age that "her attraction to men was wrong, that her loves and crushes were illicit, that her destiny was single-hood and shame,” (Sullivan 1995:257). Imagine a proposed CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT designed to ensure that this little girl and others like her would remain shamed and scorned by society, even by her family and friends. Imagine that she would never be able to have her father walk her down the isle and give her to the person she loved with all her heart. You can stop imagining, because this isn't fantasy. It is the reality of Prop 8.

Heterosexuals are trained from birth to grow up, get a job, get married, and have children. Yet for homosexuals, it seems that from the first time we broach the subject of our sexual orientation we are doomed to singlehood and shame. This doesnt have to be.

My life partner Adam and I are normal people trying to make a nice life for ourselves and lead wholesome, meaningful lives. We pay taxes. We try to do our part to conserve and help sustain our planet. We are - and have been since day one - madly in love. We are completely devoted and faithful to each other in every aspect of our lives. Thanks to a shining moment in California Supreme Court history, it is finally possible for us to get married. To demonstrate for our friends and family the love, passion, and commitment we have always shared.

Our ability to marry will not change the feelings we have for one another. But it will have a lasting impact on the world. Relationships like mine and Adams ARE rare in our community, yet it is not because of some innate characteristic of homosexuals. If homosexual relationships are scoffed at by social institutions, or, dare I say, the CONSTITUTION, how can we be expected to take them seriously either? Gay and lesbian children need adults like my partner and I to look up to. They need a model relationship to aspire to. Prop 8 will constitutionally guarantee that our relationship is not as good as heterosexual relationships and should not be aspired to by young homosexual children.

And since when has "respecting the institution" been a requirement for the right of an American citizen to marry? It is irrefutable that the institution has been abused and disrespected by heterosexuals, yet there is no proposed amendment to BAN them from the right to marry!!

Lets forget whether or not you actually feel that homosexuality is a real, immutable characteristic of people. Creating a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage is not SIMILAR to, it is EXACTLY THE SAME as creating a constitutional ban on interracial marriage, or women's voting rights. Women and racial minorities have both been in this position before... they were treated as second-class citizens. Today it would be ludicrous to think that a woman would have to fight, rally, and campaign for her right to vote, or that racial minorities would have to do the same to have the same rights as whites. That is why it saddens and enrages me to have to do so for myself and my life partner.

Vote no on prop 8. Whatever your reason. Vote no if you have ANY doubt that this is right. Would you send a man or woman on trial for murder to the gas chamber if you had even the slightest doubt of his or her guilt?

The ballot description for Proposition 8 makes it perfectly clear. Prop 8 "eliminates the right of same sex couples to marry."
No On Prop 8, Equality For All is the coalition that is leading the fight to defeat Prop 8 and defend the fundamental right to marry for all Californians. Help me help them.

If you have the means to contribute, please, please take the time to donate! Simply fill in a contribution amount and it will ask you which politician/org to donate through. This is your way of knowing that I am not just taking your money! If you don't have the means, then you can still do you part FIRST and FOREMOST by getting out and voting NO, and then spreading the word to everyone you can!
