IIn the SD primary June 3rd, 8 out of 9 prochoice, progressive Dem women won their races and head into the November general election! Senator Theresa Two Bulls (D-Pine Ridge) may face a recount but we're confident she'll come out on top for her third consecutive term as the first Native woman to win a seat in the SD legislature. Who says we can't make progress in South Dakota?

In 2006 you helped us get behind the prochoice, progressive women running for state offices in South Dakota during a grueling election cycle that had a near total ban on abortion on the ballot, too. We defeated the ban, some of our candidates won and now two years later we face similar, if not greater, challenges - the SD legislature is still only around 16% women, only 4 of those prochoice! - and another abortion ban on the ballot to boot! We're going to meet these challenges in 2008 by getting behind our progressive, prochoice candidates again!

WR!SD supporters - you! - helped us give financial support and encouragement to candidates - resources that they otherwise wouldn't have had - and moved GOTV efforts precisely where it was needed, stretching our money and bodies as far as we could in those large, rural districts. You, me - we - were there with much needed help.

Overall in SD, there are now 20+ prochoice, progressive women candidates for state legislature in '08 who are taking up the issues that matter most to their constituents and progressives everywhere, like education - SD teachers are still the lowest paid in the country, student dropout rates are staggering and schools underfunded, the environment - uranium mining has reared its ugly head, Big Oil and CAFOs are moving in on the prairies, living wages, stopping violence against women is a challenge, creating affordable health and child care and good pre-K programs, job creation, access to reproductive health services, open government and working toward more productive, healthy relationships between the State and the 9 First Nations within its boundaries.
