The media oxygen is all going to the Presidential race, but we need to remember that without a strong Democratic Senate majority, nothing can happen. The Republicans have already doubled the previous record for filibusters, and the 110th Congress isn’t even over yet! We need a progressive Senate for progressive legislation

Incumbent John Sununu is the most endangered Republican in the Senate. The New Hampshire GOP literally stole the election in 2002, when they jammed Democratic GOTV efforts (the ringleaders have pled guilty and are now in jail). Given the fundamentals of 2008, this should be a sure Dem pick-up. Let’s make sure that Shaheen has the necessary funds to make it happen.

AK-Sen (Map)

Republican incumbent Ted Stevens may be the Senate’s only UCLA grad, but he’s still an embarrassment: he’s been getting earmarks for bridges to nowhere for 3 decades now. He’s also corrupt, essentially getting home repair work for free in exchange for federal contracts to his contractor. Alaskans has wised up to his antics, and state house minority leader Begich is leading in the polls. This will be a great pickup in a red state.

Incumbent Susan Collins pretends that she’s a moderate, yet votes with George Bush virtually every time. Allen is a Congressman in one of Maine’s two House districts, and stands a fighting chance here. This could be the most expensive race in the country.

Progressives won’t like Musgrove: he’s a very conservative Democrat. But you get elected by representing the constituency, and this is Mississippi. A popular former Governor, Musgrove pioneered education reform in a state that really needs it.

With Pete Domenici’s retirement, this is a perfect chance at a pickup in the blue-trending mountain west. Udall leads in the polls, but will face one of NM’s two incumbent Republican congressional representatives. He’ll need our help.

Where are all these Udalls coming from? Tom and Mark are cousins, and Mo was father to one of them (although I can’t remember which). Another cousin, Gordon Smith, is a GOP Senator from Oregon. We’ll try to knock him off, and trade up for Mark: a superb pro-environment Congressman who will build on the growing strength of Colorado’s Democrats. A perfect gift for the 2008 Democratic Convention in Denver.
